This helps you and your listener/reader understand the character and perhaps identify with. Truth: stories contain truth yet to tell my listener something is true, or that it happened to me when it did not is breaking an agreement with the audience. Many stories talk about our ambivalence, envy, dealing with the ones who hold power, and lack of resolution; all parts of our human condition.
