    As summer winds down, parents everywhere want to help their kids prepare to start the new school year. Not only will kids need new clothes and new school supplies, but they will also need to be armed with the study skills they’ll need to succeed.     Today, Keri Moore, a health educator in the Community Wellness/Tobacco Prevention & Control Program With The Snohomish Health District, joined us by phone to explain what third hand smoke is and what its dangers are.

    This morning, I looked inside of my medicine cabinet and found an old bottle of Metho-carbamol, Cyclo-ben-zaprine, and an Albuterol inhaler that expired in 2006, all prescription drugs not being used and that have not been used for some time.

    What exactly should I do with these prescriptions? Should I just keep them, throw them away? This morning, we are speaking with Commander of the Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force, Pat Slack to talk about Snohomish County’s drug take-back program, a pilot project aimed at removing unused medications from homes…like mine…in Snohomish county.

    Now-a-days, it’s almost guaranteed that if you see a teenager, you’ll will see them with a cell phone…texting or surfing the web.

    Ever wonder what they are texting about…what it is they are looking at on the internet? Well, the answer may startle you. According to a recent study commissioned by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and cosmogirl.com, about one in five teenagers have sent or posted nude or semi-nude images of themselves online…a dangerous trend known as sexting.

    Someone who knows the dangers of sexting all to well is Mill Creek police officer, Steve Smith, who serves as the school resource officer for Jackson High School and Heatherwood Middle School. This morning he joined KSER to talk about this new trend and its consequences.

    June tenth marked the forty- seventh anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, a United States federal law aimed at abolishing wage disparity based on gender. Unfortunately, the act signed into law by President John F. Kennedy as part of his New Frontier program, has not fulfilled its purpose. Because of that, the National Partnership for Women and Families is fighting for passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act.

    This morning, we spoke with Sharyn Tejani of the National Partnership for Women and Families, to find out what disparities still exist and what the Paycheck Fairness Act would accomplish.

    This Saturday, June 5th, the Port of Everett is hosting a public workshop meeting to discuss the future of the historic Collins Building located on the Everett waterfront. The port of Everett had planned to demolish the building in order to build a high-end waterfront development. When a group of local citizens learned that the Collins building was not a part of the redevelopment plan, they decided to create the Collins building committee, a group dedicated to preserving this historic landmark. This morning we’re spoke with Valerie steel, president of historic Everett, to find out why preserving this building is so important and what’s being done to save it.
