I was vacationing in Utah recently and made time to visit some of their fine cathedrals as possible venues for The Opiate Mass. Finding enchanted spaces and owners who are open to progressive music in said spaces is important, sometimes challenging work. Not helping the matter is our odd and provocative name. It probably gets us in as much trouble as it does worthwhile attention; you 506 Members found it in your hearts to trust us and we quite fancy you for it. All this to say, we sat down to work out both an explanation and ethos for our little group and came up with this:

Our name is both a nod to the Christian liturgical form, and to Karl Marx's assessment that religion (or God or prayer or music or art or worship) are mere opiates for the masses--yes, perhaps they are. Or perhaps rest, escape, comfort, or relief are more complicated and mysterious than we know. We find ourselves partial to large gothic spaces, pipe organs, samplers, synthesizers, incense, tongues, silence, joy, antiquity, meditation, ambiguity, abstract, beauty, the body. We strive to avoid pretense, hype, cliche, certainty, celebrity, egotism, greed, noise, irony, camp.

Upcoming Performance
In other news, we put together a performance here in Seattle, coming up 12 August at the cozy Fremont Abbey. It is a bit different this go around as we are moving the chairs to the edges and having everyone bring blankets and pillows to lie down on the floor. We are also attempting four corners of surround sound with lights and such on the ceiling. We hope to see there.
